Book Review: Trust by Iyanla Vanzant

I decided to bring this book with me while I was on vacation because I had just finished ‘Maybe you should talk to someone’ (Review here) and felt like this would be the most logical next book to choose.

I had watched Iyanla on Super Soul Sundays and even seen her in person once a few years back but have never read one of her books. When she was promoting this book, I remember liking the concept of the book and going onto to Amazon and adding it to my wishlist.

The book is typical Iyanla style in that it gets right to the point: trust in yourself and what is laid out for you is fundamental. Anything other than that would bring fear, doubt and worry into your life.

The book is divided into four parts: Trust in Self, Trust in God, Trust in Life and Trust in Others. Each chapter hit me with a few ‘aha’ moments as I’m sure it will for you as well and depending on where you’re at with your journey, you may find that you loved one part more than the others. For me, I didn’t connect much to the Trust in God section but I LOVED the Trust in Self parts.

The chapter really goes into how lack of trust in yourself can lead to self-sabotage and how it can test your personal boundaries.

What are some signs that you may not trust yourself you ask? Well she gives you some on page 83:

  • I do things to prove myself and my value to others
  • I compare the choices I’ve made to those made by others
  • I minimize or deny my own needs
  • I deny or minimize my power of choice

Let those sink in for a moment. And those are just 4 of the 21 signs she gives, so get your hands on this book to learn the rest.

All in all, this book was an easy and very relatable read and is for anyone on a journey through self-discovery.
